Key Deer

IMG_1831 resizeAlthough I did not see it for myself, a couple from New York told me they saw a Key Deer nursing, the first of the babies to be born this season. Instead, I saw a herd of nine deer resting in the afternoon shade in the woods. There were five males and two of the females appeared to be pregnant. It was fascinating to be in the middle of the herd and observe their behaviors, which included licking each other, butting heads, locking antlers, and  greeting nose to nose. All the males were friendly to each other, contrary to just a few months ago when these same bucks were probably trying to kill each other. It looked like a pleasant deer family gathering on the vacant lots of Eden Pines.
