Hell’s Bay and the Florida Soft Shell Turtle

DSC01557HellsBay

Kayaking into Hell’s Bay in Flamingo Park is called such because of the difficulty getting into it and out of it as the passageway is narrow and it is like being in a large maze constructed out of everglade mangroves. Sleeping on a chickee (a man-made platform built right in the water) a manatee slept under me and emerged every 15 minutes or so to breath. He/she sounded like a person who had a bad case of bronchitis trying to take deep breaths.

The soft shell turtle  only emerges from the swamps to breed and bask in the sun. Females can weigh 44 pounds.DSC01573softshell
